Proof of Human Work

A protocol for sovereign personal identity. Prove your work. Own your proof. Trust no platform.

PHW v0.1 — DRAFT SPEC

The Problem

The internet was built assuming you are who you say you are. That assumption was convenient. It was never true. And AI broke it permanently.

Anonymity eliminated the cost of bad-faith identity. The result was predictable: coordinated inauthentic behavior, manufactured consensus, personas built to deceive and disappear. We treated it as a nuisance. It was a structural warning. Generative AI removed the last constraint. Bad-faith identity now operates at machine scale — no marginal cost, no human in the loop, no upper bound. You cannot distinguish the real from the synthetic at volume. We need a correction mechanism built into the infrastructure, not bolted on after the fact.

For thirty years, your identity lived on their servers. Your email provider, your employer, your bank — they held the proof. You got a login. When you left your job, you lost your healthcare, your email, your professional network, and every credential tied to that address — all at once, on someone else's timeline. Your LinkedIn endorsements belong to LinkedIn. Your GitHub history belongs to GitHub. The company folds and the proof disappears. You never owned any of it. You just rented access to your own story.

Now generative AI floods the world with machine-produced output indistinguishable from human work at scale. In the old era, human work was the baseline. In this era, it is the signal. The solution is not complicated — it is simple, elegant, and cryptographically sound. That is exactly what makes it powerful.

PHW gives you a room of your own — a private space to hang your human identity, one you are in complete control of, that no platform can enter, revoke, or sell. A coat rack on your wall, in your house, with locks only you hold. You hang on it what you choose — your medical records, your banking, your professional credentials, your verified moments of real human effort. Nobody else touches the hooks. When you walk into any room — a job application, a Substack comment, a Teams meeting, a collector platform, a border crossing — you reach back to your coat rack, pull what you need, and present it as a signed cryptographic proof. Not a screenshot. Not a platform's word for it. A token that says: this is true, I hold the evidence, and you can verify it without knowing anything else about me. That is how you filter the signal out of the noise. That is how you assert a real, verified human identity in a world that has forgotten what one looks like.

Three Guarantees

🔒
Privacy
Your raw data never leaves your device unless you explicitly release it. Verifiers see hashes, not originals.
Truth
Every assertion is cryptographically bound to evidence you hold. You cannot forge a PHW token without the key.
Proof
Any verifier can confirm the assertion without seeing the underlying data. The proof is portable and self-contained.

How It Works

01
You gather evidence
A photo, a document, a transaction — anything that proves a unit of real human work. It lives in your Identity Layer, encrypted, local.
02
Your Filter Layer decides what to share
You set the rules: what to disclose to which verifier, for how long, one-time or recurring. The default is deny-all.
03
A signed Assertion Bundle is generated
Your evidence is hashed and cryptographically signed. The bundle contains only what you approved — no raw data, no leakage.
04
Any verifier can check it
The token is portable. No account required, no platform dependency. Ed25519 signatures make it self-verifiable offline — forever.

Why Now

"We've shifted from retrieval computing — data sits in a center, you go get it — to generative computing — tokens are produced at inference time, at scale, indistinguishable from human output." — Jensen Huang, SCSP, 2025

In the retrieval era, human work was the background. Everything on the internet was produced by a person. The question was not "is this human?" — it obviously was.

In the generative era, machine output is the background. Human work is now the signal. A signal with no mechanism to identify itself is indistinguishable from noise.

PHW is the mechanism. Machine tokens are now abundant and cheap. Human work tokens are scarce and cannot be faked. The protocol that makes them legible and portable is the most important piece of identity infrastructure that does not yet exist.
